Family members of the man who shot two Rottweilers in Nassau County this past weekend, killing one, are speaking out.
They are joining neighbors who say the animals were constantly getting out, creating a threat.
According to a deputy's report, the dogs got loose and charged Michael Clemons and his family.
"Gotta carry my gun to get the mail and take out the trash," said John Chandler, a neighbor.
Chandler says Amy Seus' two Rottweilers roamed his neighborhood, getting more aggressive in the last few months.
“It's not fun to be scared in your own yard," Chandler said.
Clemons told deputies Saturday the two dogs charged them in his backyard.
"We've seen them attack before. This wasn't the first time," said his wife Tanya Clemons.
According to the police report, Clemons got his gun and shot the dogs, killing one and injuring the other.
“I seen him standing over him with the gun,” Seus said. “They're my babies, and Brody's gone now.”
Monday, Seus told Action News that Clemons didn't need to shoot the dogs.
Tuesday, Clemons' family and his other neighbors defended his actions.
"What we wanted to make sure everybody knew is this is not a neighborhood out to destroy animals, kill dogs. We love our pets," said Myron Thomas, a neighbor.
"Bottom line, if the owners maintained them properly, this wouldn't have happened," Chandler said.
Seus' second dog is expected to recover in a couple months.
As for the police report on Seus, it says she swore at the deputies and had to be restrained.
Deputies say she smelled of alcohol and witnesses say they heard her tell Clemons she would quote "return the favor" for the death of the dog.
