"The spacecraft is almost always busy imaging the lunar surface so only rarely does an opportunity arise such that its camera instrument can capture a view of Earth," according to NASA.

The image is composed from a series of pictures taken by the orbiter's cameras Oct. 12, according to NASA.

"The image is simply stunning," Noah Petro, a scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, said in a release.
