An Alberta, Canada, man was given a heavy fine for texting on his mobile phone while waiting for his coffee at Tim Hortons.
According to CTV, A.J. Daoust said he was replying to a text message when a police officer knocked on his window and asked him to pull over.
Daoust was given a ticket for $287 (roughly the equivalent $215 U.S. currency).
"I said, 'In a drive-thru? Really? He was definitely within his rights…but to me this is ridiculous. It's just kind of heavy-handed," Daoust told CTV.
According to Alberta provincial law, drivers are restricted from using hand-held devices while behind the wheel. The legislation applies to drivers on publicly and privately-owned property that drivers are permitted to use for the passage or parking of vehicles.
Jeff Kasbrick, at Alberta Motor Association, told CTV that enforcing the law is up to the discretion of the issuing officer:
"There's the classic, that we see all the time, which is at a red light people will sometimes pull out their cellphones. That's considered a distraction," Kasbrick told CTV.
