A 66-year-old Tennessee woman became a great-grandmother on Tuesday night and handled the delivery chores herself.

Lois Greer delivered Isaiah Blake Puckett, who weighed in at 8 pounds, 3 ounces, in a Food City parking lot in Kingsport as ambulances rushed to the scene.

"It's so exciting," Greer told the Times-News. "My adrenaline was so high."

Greer was with Alecia Puckett and her husband, William Puckett, at their Kingsport home. After returning from church — where the congregation prayed for the health of mother and child — Alecia’s water broke.

The trio jumped into the car of Alecia’s father, Mack Greer, and he steered his only daughter, son-in-law and mother toward Kingsport. William was in the backseat by Alecia’s side, while Greer was in the front passenger seat timing contractions. They were soon down to three-minute intervals.

About two miles from the hospital, the baby was ready. Mack Greer parked at the Food City lot and called 911 while Lois Greer moved to the backseat with her granddaughter.

“I’m out of the car, and (a dispatcher) heard the baby crying,” Mack Greer told the Times-News. “She said, ‘Is that the baby?’ I said, ‘Yeah, that’s the baby.’ ”

“He was here in just a minute or two,” Lois Greer said. “I jumped in the backseat and delivered the baby.”

EMS soon arrived, whisking new mother and child into an ambulance and to a local hospital, where Isaiah was pronounced healthy.
