A local law enforcement agency is backing a book with a provocative title. Rowan County Sheriff Kevin L. Auten said he wants all of his officers to read the book "A Survival Guide: How NOT to Get KILLED by the POLICE, PART 1."
The book was written by New York attorney M. Quentin Williams. He's a former federal prosecutor and FBI agent.
"I think officers all over the country should read it," Williams said.
He said he gave the book its title for good reason.
"That's the question that's been asked to me over 100 times by clients family friends," he said.
He said he wrote the book after his wife observed him being pulled over and profiled by police while he was an FBI agent.
"She would ask me, 'How did you do that? How did you get out of that without being emotional, without escalating the situation and how did you diffuse it so that the police officer felt safe?'" he said.
So he put that advice into the book and released it as he saw cases like the Jonathan Ferrell shooting in Charlotte in the national media.
He hopes it will humanize police and suspects and bridge a gap.
“My goal is to get my officers to read the book, and I want feedback from them,” Auten said.
The book gives sound advice and his officers could gain insight from William’s unique story, he said.
"I don't think people always understand why we do what we do, and we don't understand why people react the way they do," Auten said.
Williams is asking Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and other major police departments across the U.S. to use the book in training.
