A large black bear that was roaming the city all week was shot and killed by officials with the Washington Fish & Wildlife and Lacey Police Saturday.
The bear climbed 200 feet up a tree behind a home where a garage sale was happening.
Officers said it was unfortunate but they had no other option to remove the animal from the populated neighborhood—with three schools nearby.
Neighbors crowded around the wildlife official's truck to take pictures and talk about their own encounters with the bear.
The animal was a large male black bear weighing about 225 pounds.
It will be donated to tribal elders at the Nisqually Reservation.
There were no reportings of aggressive behavior.
Neighbors were asked to remain aware, store their grills and garbage in garages, pick up any ripe fruit that may have fallen from trees in the yard, and not to let kids and pets play in the nearby woods, according to wildlife officials.
