With the support of a 34th Democrat in the U.S. Senate, President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran is now on its way to being implemented, giving him a major foreign policy victory and dealing a political setback to Republicans.
“I will vote in favor of this deal,” Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) announced on Wednesday morning, giving Democrats enough votes to uphold a veto by the President of a Republican plan to block the deal.
Like other Democrats, Mikulski acknowledged that the plan isn’t perfect, but said it’s the best choice to deal with Iran.
“I have concluded that this Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is the best option available to block Iran from having a nuclear bomb,” Mikulski said in a written statement.
Democrats were thrilled with the news of Mikulski’s support.
Democrats and the White House are still hoping to get to 41 votes in support of the deal in the Senate, because that would allow them to block the GOP deal, and not even put the President in the position of having to veto a resolution of “disapproval” being pushed by the GOP.
Democrats would need to win 7 of these 10 votes to get to that magic number of 41
Both houses of Congress are scheduled to debate and vote on the Iran deal after lawmakers return from an extended summer break next week.
As for Republicans running for President, the reaction was expected.
“When I’m President, we won’t just reverse President Obama’s dangerous Iran deal. We will increase sanctions on Iran,” Marco Rubio tweeted Wednesday.
