How can one reach #BlackLivesMatter movement supporters? Morehouse College graduate Donovan X. Ramsey has a few ideas.
Ramsey penned an op-ed for the New York Times in which he discusses the importance of the black millennial voter in the 2016 election. The piece was trending in Atlanta immediately after it was published on Monday morning.
One solution Ramsey offers up is as simple as looking at the roots of the movement: Twitter and social media in general.
Ramsey gives examples of democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders missing the mark when it comes to reaching and connecting with young black voters.
He cites Atlanta-based #AUCShutItDown's disruption of Hillary Clinton's Atlanta rally, during which the group publish a statement saying that rhetoric does not "give confidence to black voters that we can trust Hillary to prioritize the necessity of ensuring our safety."
Not long after protesting Clinton's Atlanta event, #AUCShutItDown organized a solidarity march through downtown Atlanta in protest of racial injustices on their own campuses and at the University of Missouri.
Ramsey’s closes the 1,000-word piece by reiterating his main claim: if Democratic candidates want the support of black millennials “they’ll have to forgo their usual youth and black outreach tactics for ones that take seriously the intersection of those identities.”
