It’s a wet ride for the Monday morning commute, and rain chances are only going to increase throughout the day, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Light, spotty rain showers are falling all across North Georgia at the start of the commute, with the heaviest rain crossing over the Alabama line. Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said those heavy downpours will reach metro Atlanta by sunrise, and more rain is on the way.

“It’s going to be kind of a messy morning commute, I think, across a lot of North Georgia,” Monahan said.

Showers are 40% likely for the morning drive, he said. By lunchtime, that chance increases to 60%, and it jumps again to 70% for the evening drive. With all the showers around, temperatures in metro Atlanta should only reach the 70s this afternoon, according to Monahan.

The rain will “park itself” over North Georgia for the next couple of days, he said.

“Last week we had several days that had total sunshine,” he said. “This week, we’re going to have several days that are going to have total cloud cover. I don’t expect much of any sunshine today, tomorrow and Wednesday. It’s going to get better, though, by the end of the week.”

Monahan expects more widespread rain Tuesday and even cooler weather with a projected high of 72 degrees. The average high for this time of year is 79 degrees.

According to Channel 2, rain chances remain elevated through Thursday. Friday has a 40% chance of showers, but Monahan said it is looking drier and sunnier for the weekend.

While not all of metro Atlanta is in the rain Monday morning, there is a good chance commuters will encounter wet pavement. Multiple crashes have been reported as of 6:30 a.m., but there are no longstanding delays.

“Overall, looking pretty good, especially if you are making your way into the city from the northern suburbs,” traffic reporter Mike Shields said.
