Police arrested a California man who they said stole a lottery ticket from his roommate that was worth $10 million, the Sacramento Bee reported.
Vacaville police arrested Adul Saosongyang, 35, on Monday at California lottery headquarters in Sacramento and booked him on a charge of grand theft, the newspaper reported.
On its Facebook page, the Vacaville Police Department released details of the incident.
On Dec. 20, a man bought a $30 Lottery Scratcher ticket at the Lucky Grocery Store in Vacaville and thought he won $10,000. He went home and shared the news with his two roommates, police said.
However, when he went to redeem the ticket at lottery headquarters in Sacramento, the man was told the ticket was not a winner and appeared to have been altered, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Believe his ticket had been stolen, the man filed a police report, the newspaper reported. On Dec. 21, Saosongyang went to cash in the ticket and was told it was worth $10 million, the Bee reported.
The lottery office, unaware the ticket had been reported stolen, began its normal investigation process for any winning ticket worth more than $600, the newspaper reported. Lottery investigators went to the store where the ticket was bought and viewed surveillance video. They began working with police after learning the ticket could have been stolen, the Chronicle reported.
On Monday, lottery officials called Saosongyang and invited him to collect his winnings. When Soasongyang rived at lottery headquarters he was arrested, the Bee reported.
