The Woodstock City Council has approved spending more than $600,000 on the planned Elm Street Playground at Market and Maple streets in the downtown area.

A construction contract of $383,893 was awarded to P.R.O. Building Systems Inc., the highest-scoring, responsive, responsible bidder of three firms that responded to the city’s request for bids, according to a staff report to the council.

The council also approved spending $126,906 for the purchase and installation of Kompan playground equipment through a cooperative purchasing agreement with the U.S. Communities Government Purchasing Alliance.

The city had budgeted $500,000 for the project, a sum that included $100,000 for restrooms, staff said. Because construction and equipment costs came in higher than expected, staff requested a $141,299 major budget amendment, bringing the project’s total cost to $641,299.

The budget amendment moves funds from the Dupree Park Shade Structure project and undesignated park projects, staff said.
