The Woodstock City Council has signed off on closing Market Street downtown on Saturday mornings as late as December to allow an extended season for the Woodstock Farm Fresh Market.
Market Street had been closed Saturdays from April to October for the event. In recent years, a “Winter Market” ran through December, but the street was open to traffic and vendors were restricted to the sidewalk, said Kyle Bennett, Woodstock tourism manager and manager of the market.
The council’s recent action “basically means if the number of vendors warrants it, we can continue to keep the street blocked off” past October, Bennett said. The 2018 market will operate from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays, April 21-Dec. 29.
Being able to use the street “is better for the vendors and usually results in more people shopping,” Bennett said. “Once the number of vendors drops below a certain number, we won’t block the street any longer.”
Permanent signs will be installed to notify the public of the Saturday closures. Market Street is to be reopened by 1:30 p.m. Saturdays.
