The Woodstock City Council approved, on first reading, a change in its retirement plan for police officers and firefighters. It would allow them to retire without penalty as early as age 55, with 25 years of service, using a so-called “rule of 80.”

City officials view it as a recruitment tool to help attract capable public safety employees.

This move, along with a general pay increase a couple of years ago and an education and training pay hike, will help make Woodstock police more competitive in the marketplace, said Police Chief Calvin Moss.

In other action: In conjunction with the Main Street Woodstock group, the city is considering a multiple venue/multiple artist concert event in August that would help bring music to the downtown area in place of the city’s annual summer concert series. The 2016 series has been canceled due to construction of the amphitheater at the Park at City Center.
