Plans for a long-talked-about city of Woodstock amphitheater in the Park at City Center downtown have been thrown another curve.

Woodstock City Manager Jeff Moon told the city council Monday night that three construction bids came in considerably over earlier cost estimates. Moon said those estimates put the project at $2.4-$2.5 million while the bids received in the last 10 days ranged from $4.2-$4.4 million

As a result, Moon said the city is looking at re-bidding. He said another possibility would be reducing the amount of concrete and masonry in the project, since that seemed to drive up the bid amounts. Moon said officials would study alternatives and make a formal presentation to the council in July.

As envisioned, the amphitheater would include grass terraced seating for some 6,000 people, a band shell, retaining walls and restrooms. The facility would be used for a variety of concerts and community events. The project was first floated abut six years ago, but was put on hold for some time because of the economy.
