Q: Starting in July, Georgia residents who need to renew their driver’s licenses must do so in person. Does this mean the Department of Driver Services will be opening those service centers that were closed to prevent the long wait times we experienced several years ago?

A: There are no plans to open new Customer Service Centers (CSCs), Susan Sports, the public information officer for DDS, told Q&A on the News in an email. She said that the DDS has extended its hours to help accommodate the crowds. Many CSCs, particularly in the metro Atlanta area, are open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. They are open from 7:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays. They are closed on Mondays. Sports said Tuesdays are the busiest days and that the CSCs usually are less crowded on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. She recommends going to www.dds.ga.gov/SecureID/default.aspx to determine the documents you need to renew your license before going to a CSC. "Once a customer renews in person after July 1, 2012, they will be able to renew online the next time they are up for renewal," Sports said. A Georgia driver's license or state-issued ID card can be renewed up to 150 days prior to the expiration date or if the license has not been expired for more than two years.
