Q: Why did the Legislature decide to make 127 credit hours the limit for the amount of hours covered by the HOPE Scholarship when some engineering majors, such as biomedical engineering at Georgia Tech, require as many as 132 hours?

-- Nolan Hackett, Marietta

A: The limit of 127 credit hours has been in place for a number of years, but recent changes eliminated any exceptions to the rule, Tracy Ireland, a spokesman for the Georgia Student Finance Commission, told Q&A on the News. Through summer term 2011, students in specific undergraduate degree programs requiring more than 127 credit hours were eligible for HOPE scholarship payments of up to 150 credit hours. Most programs can be finished with 127 hours. The Legislature this year made changes to the financially struggling HOPE Scholarship program, which is funded by the Georgia Lottery.
