Q: We are concerned about the huge debt that many college students have after they graduate from college. Rather than cancel their debt, perhaps we need to study the salaries of the college professors. What is the average salary of a professor at the University of Georgia?

-- Glenda Bell, Atlanta

A: A full professor at UGA makes an average of $107,800 a year, according to a yearly survey by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). The 2011-12 survey, which included 1,251 colleges, was released in April. Associate professors make an average of $79,200, assistant professors are paid an average of $75,300 and instructors make an average of $52,500, according to the survey. At the time of the survey, UGA had 2,304 full-time faculty and 445 who were part time, according to U.S. Department of Education figures cited by the Chronicle of Higher Education. Nationally, full professors make an average of $113,176, associate professors make $78,565, assistant professors make $66,564 and instructors make $47,847, the survey found, according to the AAUP. It found that full-time faculty salaries rose 1.8 percent for 2011-12.

Q: I've noticed a crane near the Olympic caldron tower recently. Is routine maintenance being done, or is there something more major going on?

-- Randy Layton, Covington

A: The City of Atlanta and Fulton County Recreation Authority (AFCRA) is doing a "complete overhaul of the caldron," which includes structural repair and painting. The work began on April 25 and is scheduled to be finished in mid-July, Violet Travis Ricks, the authority's executive director, told Q&A on the News. The 1996 Olympic caldron is at the corner of Fulton Street and Hank Aaron Drive.
