Henry County Board of Commissioners Chairman Tommy Smith has proposed a 5-percent pay increase for all county employees effective Jan. 1 of this year. He said it can be done without raising taxes in the current budget.

Smith made these comments at the conclusion of the board’s Feb. 17 regular meeting, shortly after the approval of more than $3 million in equipment purchases for various county departments. Noting the many times in the past several years that they have gone without pay raises and had to endure furlough days, Smith said this “worn-out fleet” needed the same kind of attention just given to the county’s equipment.
