Shoupade Park was added recently by the Cobb County Board of Commissioners to the Cobb County Register of Historic Places.
During the Civil War in 1864, Confederate Brigadier General Francis Asbury Shoup designed the River Line, using artillery redans and unique, arrowhead-shaped infantry forts called “Shoupades” in the 4700 block of present-day Oakdale Road near the Chattahoochee River.
Of the 36 Shoupades constructed, nine remain in the form of earthworks, according to Roberta Cook, founder and president of the River Line Historic Area.
These forts were so effective they caused Union General William Tecumseh Sherman to lead his army up to Roswell.
Once a property is placed on the Cobb Register, any material change to the property’s exterior must be approved by the Cobb Historic Preservation Commission by obtaining a Certificate of Appropriateness to keep intact the historic integrity of the property.
However, properties on the Cobb Register that are owned by a local government are exempt from the COA requirement.
