“Georgia has the second highest childhood obesity rate in the country,” said Lauren Korthoff, Program Coordinator at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, at the Family Sock-Hop event held by Primrose School of Dunwoody last Friday. The sock-hop was a part of the school’s national Family Dance-Off contest, in its second year, that is benefitting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals with CHOA being the contender for Atlanta.
The event calls for all families to upload a 30-second video of their best dance moves which get voted on by the public. The family who gets voted with the best dance moves not only wins $5,000, but $30,000 gets donated to the winning city’s Children Miracle Network hospital by the Primrose Children’s Foundation.
The dance-off highlights a bigger conversation: getting active and fighting childhood obesity. “[Primrose] has been dedicated to promoting active mind and active lifestyle, and the dance-off is a way to get the families to move, dance and have fun together,” said Senior Director Michelle Zierten.
Atlanta families are entering the contest valuing the fun and time spent together, and also embracing the positive message. “It is really nice to see [Primrose] upholding the same values of good eating habits, staying active… the same we try to teach our daughter,” said James Bolton, of Dunwoody, who also uploaded a video into the contest.
“We already have a Smyrna family who is now a finalist, and we would love to see more families enter, and hopefully become finalists and win!” expressed Zierten. “This is really about doing something fun, easy with your family and it is helping to start a bigger conversation about staying active and making decisions for a healthy lifestyle.”
The contest is being held through 200 Primrose Schools located in over 15 states and is open to all families. The deadline to submit a video is March 19. For more rules and how to enter, visit www.familydanceoff.com
