A 31-year-old Jonesboro man is in Clayton County Jail, charged with two counts of aggravated assault and other offenses, after he allegedly ran down two people in a mobile home park, crashed into a pickup truck and then tried to flee the scene.

Hernandez Ismael was arrested after the Sunday afternoon incident in the Clayton Mobile Home Park in the 6300 block of Tara Boulevard, according to Officer Phong Nguyen of the Clayton County Police Department.

Ismael got into an argument with some friends about 5:45 p.m. He allegedly got into his green Dodge Neon, gunned the engine and struck two bystanders.

“After hitting those two bystanders, he fled and hit a Ford F-150 that was parked,” Nguyen said. “After hitting the F-150, he tried to leave again, but his car was too damaged to drive off, so he fled on foot.”

Witnesses told Channel 2 Action News that Ismael also nearly hit an 11-year-old girl, who jumped out of the way and saw the Neon crash into the F-150.

“He was wiggling the car, and he crashed into the car,” the girl, Carina Umana, told Channel 2.

A witness went after Ismael and brought him back to the mobile home park, where police took him into custody, Nguyen said.

One of those who was struck suffered a broken leg and was taken to a local hospital, Nguyen said. The other complained of back pain. Neither injury was considered life-threatening.

Ismael is charged with two counts of aggravated assault; one count each of hit and run, hit and run involving an unattended vehicle, and causing serious bodily injury; and three counts of leaving the scene of an accident, Nguyen said.

The suspect was assigned an $11,100 bond and was being held Monday night in Clayton County Jail.
