Mei Garden in Lawrenceville failed its second routine health inspection this year because foods were not protected from contamination.

Chicken and noodles were cooled at room temperature for an extended period of time instead of using a more effective rapid cooling method, the Gwinnett County health inspector said. The food was discarded.

Also, employees were handling food with contaminated gloves and utensils. One employee, after handling raw chicken, continued cooking without washing or changing gloves. Another employee continued with food prep after having hands and a utensil contaminated with raw egg.

Points were also taken off because food was not properly separated. Raw scallops were stored on top of a torn bag of cooked pork in the chest freezer. Raw pork was stored above cooked chicken and cooked duck in another freezer.

Other prepared foods in the various freezers were not date-marked for disposal.

Among other code violations, the hand sink was being used to fill a cleaning bucket. Menus were misleading, the inspector said, because all of the crab selections listed on the menus were actually imitation crab.

Mei Garden, 3059 Lawrenceville Highway, scored 26/U. The restaurant also failed a routine inspection in February with a 59/U, then brought the score up to a 96/A on a follow-up inspection.

Since it was Mei Garden’s second consecutive failing health score, the restaurant’s food permit was suspended and the facility closed briefly for staff training. It was re-opened later that day. [Editor's Note: Mei Garden passed the follow-up inspectin with 86/B.]
