Restaurant inspection:Kampai Sushi in Lithonia fails inspection

Kampai Sushi & Steak in Lithonia failed a recent health inspection because some raw seafood and vegetables prepared for the hibachi grills were not separated or stored to prevent contamination.

Zucchini was stored in the same metal container with mussels and raw sea bass, according to the DeKalb County health inspector.

In addition, raw shrimp, raw scallops and cooked chicken were left uncovered.

The inspector also took off points because an employee was cutting up zucchini without wearing gloves, and employees were eating and drinking in the food prep area.

Kampai Sushi & Steak, 7105 Stonecrest Parkway, scored 53/U on the routine inspection. The restaurant had previous scores of 73/C and 72/C.

In other code violations, cold and hot foods were out of temperature range. The thermostat in the prep top cooler was set too high, the inspector said. Cooked rice was discarded.

Additional points were taken off because dirty plates were stacked with food debris still on them. The dishes were moved to be washed. One of the coolers needed cleaning. Its shelves were dirty with a black substance, the inspector said. Also, the walls were dirty with food splatter.

Kampai Sushi & Steak will be re-inspected. [Editor's Note: Kampai Sushi & Steak passed the follow-up inspection with 85/B.]
