NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — More wet weather is on the way for Newton and Butts counties while people there continue to clean up from last week’s rain.

Flooding has affected thousands of people across north Georgia, including Nathan Bradley. Bradley is well known in the area after he helped four children when their parents were killed in a crash on Halloween. Bradley was a first responder who kept the kids distracted until their grandmother arrived from Florida.

Last week’s rain flooded Bradley’s Newton County home, where he and his wife have lived for 10 months. He says when the river rises, his property floods.

“It caught me off guard,” Bradley said.

Bradley and his wife have had to move everything of value inside the home to higher ground after the yard and subfloor flooded on Christmas.

“They said it was going to storm and I’m a fan of storms, but I didn’t think it would get this bad,” he said.

He says the water started to rise on Christmas Eve and just continued getting higher and higher.

“There’s two large rivers that flow into Lake Jackson and they get a lot. They collect a lot of water from small creeks, all across the state, I think that played a role in it,” he said.

Bradley also tells me the water had nowhere to go, because the dam gates here were closed until after Christmas Day. He says the water didn’t start to recede until this past weekend.

Now they are working to clean up as they prepare for even more rain this week.

“Were hoping this is the one time we experience this while living here,” he said.

As a state employee, he cannot accept donations, but Bradley is fully insured so the flooding didn’t hurt his wallet. He and his wife are staying with family in Conyers until things dry out.
