Six days after she was shot by her estranged husband, Fulton County Assistant District Attorney April McConnell still faces an uncertain future.

Hospital officials and family members have declined to provide the media with updates on McConnell’s condition, but in a statement released Thursday to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, her boss, Fulton D.A. Paul Howard, hinted at the tough road that lies ahead for the 31-year-old prosecutor.

“April McConnell is a fighter. She is fighting her wounds and injuries with all her might,” Howard said. “She has undergone medical procedures that we hope will help her flourish. Her family has asked that we respect her privacy during this healing period. Please continue to pray for her swift recovery.”

McConnell and Levon Hailey, 39, were shot multiple times Friday morning while parked in McConnell’s car on Fairway Circle in southwest Atlanta. Atlanta police said they were ambushed by Tranard McConnell, 32, who, hours later, turned the gun on himself at a College Park cemetery where his grandparents are buried. Hailey’s injuries were not considered as serious as McConnell’s but his condition is unknown.

Four days before the shooting, April and Tranard McConnell appeared before a Fayette County judge to sign a marital settlement agreement, typically a precursor to divorce. The agreement alleged no marital infidelity and stated they wished to remain friends and “provide (the) other with emotional support and encouragement.”

April McConnell, daughter of well-known political operative Kevin Ross, is considered a rising star in Atlanta’s legal community. She was assisting in the Atlanta Public Schools cheating trial — one of her first assignments with the D.A.’s office — at the time of the shooting.
