The Powder Springs City Council voted 5-0 Monday to require property owners to clean their detention ponds.
Previously, the city had been paying for maintenance of these 113 ponds instead of charging fees to the property owners. Naturchem Inc. was hired Monday by the council to provide the maintenance work.
For those who live in subdivisions with a homeowners’ association, the cost will be divided equally among the property owners for initial cleaning and continued maintenance.
City Manager Pam Conner told the AJC Monday “a sample letter” said the initial fee would be $163 and $96 for follow-up cleanings.
In October, Cornelius and Janet Savage appealed to the city council saying they couldn’t afford to clean their detention pond. They received a municipal court citation with a $100 fine for failure to appear.
When the Savages suggested they fill the detention pond with dirt instead of spending money to maintain it, Councilman Chris Wizner told them they would not be allowed to do that.
