Pedestrian fatalities have increased significantly from five in 2012 to 11 so far this year, according to Gwinnett County Police Department data. Almost all occurred between 8 and 11 p.m. with most around Jimmy Carter Boulevard, Singleton Road, and South Norcross Tucker Road, data shows.

The majority of pedestrians killed were adult males. Only one of the fatalities took place in a crosswalk and ten of the eleven victims were at fault in the accident, according to Gwinnett police.

At the current rate, the county could see 14 pedestrian fatalities by the end of 2014, police predict.

“We are particularly concerned about pedestrian safety at this time of year. It gets dark sooner in the fall and winter and most fatal pedestrian accidents happen in the hours just after sundown. Pedestrians must take it upon themselves to follow the law and keep themselves safe,” said Public Information Officer Cpl. Jake Smith.
