There's no question about it: people in Georgia like their guns.

The number of requests for instant background checks on would-be gun buyers set a record in 2015. The background checks, performed by the FBI, have increased 51 percent in Georgia since Barack Obama took office in 2009.

Many believe that's because people rush out to buy guns every time Obama says something about regulating them.

"He's the best gun salesman the gun industry has ever had," said Jeff Appleton of Roswell as he shopped last week at a gun store. " . . . The uninformed public is going out and buying guns because of him."

Obama agrees.

"I've been president for over seven years and gun sales don't seem to have suffered during that time," he said on CNN last week. "They’ve gone up.  I've been very good for gun manufacturers.”

Are there areas in which gun-rights advocates and the president agree? You might be surprised.
