An 87-year-old woman is recovering after Sandy Springs Police say she hit her gas instead of the brake while trying to park Thursday, causing her SUV to flip over.
“I just saw a car flipped over in the parking lot,” said the owner of a nearby business, who asked that her name not be used. “When we saw that I just ran over to try to help the lady. There was a lot of people with me helping.”
Police released surveillance video showing the woman pulling into a parking spot at an Atlanta shopping center.
“The driver was essentially trapped in the car,” Sergeant Sam Worsham said. “We believe it was an accident.”
Shawn Cummings was cutting hair at his nearby barber shop when he saw the incident. He said he’s never seen anything like it before.
“Never. Maybe back in the day when I saw Evil Knievel,” said Cummings said, adding that he was amazed at how the woman walked away with just a few scratches.
“She got to be, like, ‘super granny’ because she got out walking,” said Cummings. “She didn’t even want to go in the ambulance.”
After the incident, a police captain told WSB witnesses claimed they saw people stealing items out of the woman’s car, which was initially reported.
However, after police had a chance to review surveillance footage of the incident, they determined the witnesses were removing items from the car to get to the woman and that nothing was taken.
“Pretty much, I saw people taking things out of the back of the car,” Cummings said. “They were trying to get to her, not trying to steal anything from her.”
The woman’s daughter-in-law said she is doing fine.
