At its most recent work session, the Norcross City Council discussed the possibility of creating zoning changes to allow for the construction of tiny homes on existing lots. The city will begin by considering allowing tiny homes as accessory dwellings to existing homes. These homes could be used by extended family of the property owner or rented out.
Eventually, the city envisions the possibility of an actual tiny home neighborhood.
A tiny home would be defined as having a square footage of 100 to 400 feet on a fixed foundation. The initial recommendation, made by Councilmember Josh Bare, suggests limiting the structures to one per lot and with a minimum lot requirement of a half-acre. To accomplish this goal, the city will need to look at the creation of a separate building code since tiny homes have to utilize space very efficiently. For instance, bathrooms would be very small, and the home might have only one doorway for the entire house.
