New horse trails open at state park on Lake Lanier shores

More than 12 miles of equestrian trials have opened at a lakefront state park just outside of Gwinnett County.

Don Carter State Park announced its new set of horse trails was open as of Tuesday morning. The 12.5-mile trail system has four main loops and multiple connector trails for you and your equine pal to walk, trot or canter through.

You must bring your own horse to the trail; none are housed on-site for rental. Horse owners must bring Coggins paperwork — forms showing that your horse has undergone blood tests for infectious equine diseases — to be permitted to ride.

Trail maps are not yet available online, but can be found at the park’s Visitor Center.

The trails are open from 7 a.m. to dusk daily. Parking costs $5 per day. The park, which sits on the shores of Lake Lanier, is located at 5000 N. Browning Bridge Road in Gainesville.
