Peachtree City plans to create a new emergency unit near its southern border. The City Council voted 5-0 on Feb. 1 to lease 2,205 square feet of space at 825 Highway 74 South to build a “quick response unit” that could provide faster fire and emergency medical services to residents in the southern end of the city, especially the Somerby senior living complex.

Assistant Fire/EMS Chief Kevin Baggett said demand for emergency services is rising as the city’s population ages. The new unit will have a single multipurpose vehicle and use staff reallocated for that location. Funding will come from impact fees and possibly federal grants.
