The Milton City Council has authorized staff to seek a $100,000 state grant to fund the construction of a fishing pier in Providence Park.

The grant, out of the Land & Water Conservation Fund of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, will require a 50-50 match by the city, for a total project cost of $200,000, according to Parks and Recreation Director Jim Cregge.

Providence Park is a former Fulton County park on 42 acres that was closed for 12 years until Milton acquired it, cleaned it up and reopened it in November 2016. At the time, a safety inspection determined that a dock in the lake had fallen into disrepair and had to be removed.

Milton proposes creating a fishing pier and pavilion that will restore some access to the water as part of the Providence Park master plan, according to the city’s grant pre-application form.

Local governments will be notified in February if their projects qualify to proceed to the next step, submitting formal applications, with the state working with grant applicants next spring.
