A group of civil and immigrant rights activists on Tuesday presented Gov. Nathan Deal’s office with a petition calling on the governor to remove a man he appointed to a state panel aimed at helping enforce Georgia’s immigration laws.
Steve Golden, who started the petition and is executive vice president of the Young Democrats of Georgia, said Deal should remove anti-illegal immigration activist Phil Kent from the Immigration Enforcement Review Board. Golden said Kent, the national spokesman for Americans for Immigration Control, has “extreme views on race and culture.” The petition attracted more than 5,000 signatures.
Deal appointed Kent to the board this month. The governor’s office did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday. Kent responded to the petition by saying: "The name-calling and petition by the Young Democrats against me is a publicity-seeking joke. They seek to harass and intimidate me or anyone who vocally stands against their left-wing open borders philosophy.” JEREMY REDMON

The University of Georgia received $1.2 million from the National Institutes of Health to purchase equipment and other tools to help researchers studying various diseases, including cancer. Sometimes researchers had to send samples to other campuses because UGA did not have the tools to conduct the needed analysis. LAURA DIAMOND

Two Emory University scientists are leading science lab activities in Atlanta elementary schools. Candice Elam, a postdoctoral fellow in biology, is working with Whitefoord Elementary, and Brandy Wade a doctorate candidate in human genetics, is leading the East Lake Elementary science lab.
