Top Atlanta and Fulton County officials have agreed to meet next Thursday with Senior U.S. District Judge Marvin Shoob over the county's efforts to find ways to relieve overcrowding at its jail.
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and Chief Operating Officer Peter Aman will meet with Fulton Commission Chairman John Eaves and County Manager Zachary Williams during a negotiating session in Shoob's chambers at the federal courthouse. The last hurdle that could have stalled DeKalb's new superintendent from taking the reins of Georgia's third largest school district is now cleared. Cheryl L. H. Atkinson, who was the superintendent of Lorain City Schools near Cleveland, Ohio, was released from her contract by her school board this week. That step was necessary before Atkinson could start her $275,000-a-year job as DeKalb's top school official. She is expected to start on or before Sept. 15. She was selected after a 2-year search for the district that has about 96,000 students. RICH MCKAY

Zoo Atlanta visitors will have a hard time missing Lily. The 2-month-old giraffe calf was officially named Thursday by Tami Honeycutt of Ringgold, Ga., who was randomly selected as the winner of the Name the Giraffe Calf Sweepstakes.
Honeycutt said she chose the name as a tribute to her mother, Lillian.
Lily the giraffe is only the second surviving calf born at the zoo in more than 122 years. She is on exhibit daily with her mother Mona, father Abu, aunt Glenda and half-sister Zuri, who was born in July 2010. MELISSA RUGGIERI
