The University of Georgia expanded its smoking ban Thursday to bar smoking on the new health sciences campus and prohibit it within 35 feet of doors on the main campus.
UGA already barred smoking inside buildings and residence halls. The amended policy adds bus stops and outdoor covered walkways to the banned areas.
"We want people not to smoke," President Michael Adams said, adding universities ought to set an example.

Friday is a big day for future Bulldogs. Starting at 5 p.m. students can log on to the University of Georgia's web site and learn if they were accepted for this fall.
About 18,000 people applied for 5,000 slots, President Michael Adams said Thursday.
He warned many people will be disappointed and regretted that the university had to turn away between 8,000 to 10,000 Georgians.
Admitted students represent every county in Georgia and have GPAs in the 3.8 range and at least high 1200s on the SAT math and verbal sections, Adams said. LAURA DIAMOND
