Over objections from hundreds of Marietta residents, the Marietta City Council recently approved a subdivision of 40 homes by David Weekley Homes.

Opposed to the rezoning from two units per acre for single family to planned residential development for single family were Councilmen Grif Chalfant and Johnny Walker.

In favor were Councilwoman Michelle Cooper Kelley and Councilmen Stuart Fleming, Philip Goldstein, Andy Morris and Ruben Sands.

The 14.5 acres are located at 838 and 848 Powder Springs St.

The subdivision will be “age-targeted” for senior citizens, “lessening the impact on traffic,” said Kevin Moore, attorney for David Weekley Homes.

However, traffic was the main concern of speakers who opposed the development.

They said their residential streets, “full of children and pets,” are being used as cut-throughs to Whitlock Avenue by speeding drivers.

In opposition, Sherry Coleman Collins said, “Address traffic first, then development second. This density would result in a 50 percent increase of the current zoning. It is irresponsible to add all of these homes.”

Chalfant assured the residents, “We will explore all options to slow traffic on Wood Valley on the next committee agenda.”
