Marietta Mayor Steve Tumlin vetoed a measure Wednesday night when the city council voted 4-3 to limit the mayor to no more than two consecutive terms but council members to no more than three consecutive terms.
Three council members, not the required five, voted to override his veto.
When that effort failed, the council voted 5-2 for both the mayor and the council members to serve no more than three consecutive terms.
Opposed were Councilmen Anthony Coleman and Philip M. Goldstein.
First, that question will be asked of Marietta voters on a nonbinding referendum on the Nov. 3 general election ballot.
Those term limits could begin with the November 2017 city election for terms beginning January 2018.
