Franklin Road is now Franklin Gateway because of Wednesday’s 7-0 vote of the Marietta City Council.
The name change applies to the road from Banberry Road to Cobb Parkway. After several discussions and public meetings since last year, a compromise was reached to keep “Franklin” in the name - thanks to the insistence of young people from the Franklin Road area named Marietta YELLS.
Standing for Youth Empowerment through Learning, Leading and Serving, this nonprofit organization combines mentoring with leadership development, academic achievement, community involvement and service with community partners, including the Marietta Police Athletic League and Marietta City Schools. Mayor Steve Tumlin had suggested the name change last year to rebrand the area that has been the home of high-crime apartment complexes.
Now the city has torn down some of those complexes and relocated the residents, leading to Home Depot and Atlanta United Football Club announcing plans to locate their facilities in the area. Information: YELLSinc.org.
