A $25 million Norman Rockwell painting will receive extra protection because of Wednesday’s vote by the Marietta City Council.
At the request of the Coca-Cola Company, the city will pay $10,248 for insurance for the painting that is a part of the new Coca-Cola exhibition at the Marietta-Cobb Museum of Art.
More cameras, docents and security will be a part of this exhibit that opens Saturday and continues through June 26, Sally Macaulay, the museum’s executive director, told the council during a work session.
She added that it is “unheard of” for Coca-Cola to loan this painting.
The opening reception for “Catch the Wave: Works from The Coca-Cola Company and Mason Fine Art Gallery” will be 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday for $10 at the museum, 30 Atlanta St. SE, Marietta.
Besides Rockwell, original work of artists, such as Haddon Sundblom and Andy Warhol, will be included with those of contemporary artists Steve Penley, Kate Brinkworth and Todd Ford.
This museum is the only fine arts museum in metro Atlanta focusing on American art with the permanent collection housing artworks dating from the 18th century.
A nonprofit organization, the museum also hosts a variety of events, activities, exhibitions and educational opportunities throughout the year.
