Warrants released Tuesday shed new light on the death of 23-year-old James Rashad Jones of Decatur.
DeKalb County police allege Lavante Gray shot Jones 11 times in the middle of Salem Glen Road, off Salem Road. Jones had just accused Gray of stealing his wallet, according to police.
Gray, 24, then shot Jones while Jones was trying to get a car jump-started.
It happened on Sept. 1, but information has been slow to be released until Gray’s recent arrest in Ohio. He’s now in the DeKalb jail without bond.
In a twist, police said they have “pretty good evidence” that Gray never stole Jones’ wallet.
Witnesses identified Gray, who is said to have fled the scene, by name and his tag number, according to the warrant.
