A major traffic backup is being experienced on I-85 north to the Mall of Georgia exit at state Highway 20, according to authorities and motorists traveling in Gwinnett County.

The backup begins at least near Highway 316 to the south and continues on I-85 north beyond the I-985 bypass to the Mall of Georgia exit.

"The Mall of Georgia/Buford exits off I-85 are a complete mess due to the combination of already heavy holiday shopping traffic and the added congestion from the food giveaway," Gwinnett police spokesman Detective J.R. Flanagan said Saturday. No time was given on when the traffic jam might clear up.

The food giveaway is at Coolray Field, where the 12Stone Church is providing food for 6,000 unemployed families on Saturday. Families will receive a HoneyBaked ham or turkey, as well as a week's worth of groceries.
