The Lawrenceville City Council voted last week to award the Downtown Lawrenceville Pedestrian Improvements and One-Way Pair Conversion Project to the lowest of four bidders, Vertical Earth Inc.

The proposed project includes conversion of State Route 20/Clayton Street and State Route 20/Perry Street to two-way operation. The project will convert Perry and Clayton streets from three one-way travel lanes to two-way operation. The primary typical section for two-way operation will consist of one through-lane in each direction and one center two-way left turn lane. Existing signalized intersections along Perry and Clayton will be re-configured to accommodate the two-way operation, including full pedestrian upgrades.

The approved $5,128,720 contract is funded 20 percent by SPLOST, and 80 percent by Capital Outlay. About $3.5 million of that 80 percent will be reimbursed by a federal funds grant.

In discussion of the project, Mayor Judy Jordan Johnson noted, “We have many projects planned for 2017 and there is going to be some inconvenience, but it is an inconvenience that is going to make our community better.” Johnson asked citizens to remain patient during this traffic conversion project.
