Police trainees in Cherokee County now have a reminder of one of the county’s longtime law officers.

Crews this week put up signs designating a 2.5-mile pedestrian and bike trail as “Victor’s Challenge,” in honor of longtime Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office chief deputy Vic West. West is retiring at year’s end after a 38-year law enforcement career, including serving as the sheriff’s second-in-command since 2008.

The $46,000 trail is part of the year-old Roger D. Garrison Law Enforcement Training Center on Chattin Drive in Canton, and is designed for law enforcement use only. It was designed and built by the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (SORBA), said sheriff’s Lt. Jay Baker.
