Police were called Tuesday to the Lowe’s on Atlantic Boulevard after passersby saw the baby girl crying and sweating profusely in a car parked in a sunny spot outside the store. At the time, the temperature outside was 85 degrees.

Officers said a man noticed a group crowded around the car, spotted the girl and used a baseball bat to break a window and get her out. He ran inside Lowe’s with the baby in an attempt to cool her.

Authorities determined the baby was left in the car by Zoya Thomas, 30. She told police that she left the child sleeping while she went into Lowe’s to look at paint colors. She claimed she was only in the store for five minutes.

Police arrested Thomas on a child neglect charge. She remained jailed Wednesday afternoon.
