The Harvard Debate Council Diversity Project, a subsidiary of the Harvard Debate Council is hosting a community workshop in debate and public speaking for middle and high school students in metro Atlanta noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25 at Russell Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, 504 Fair St. SW, Atlanta.

The Atlanta-based pipeline program recruits, trains and matriculates highly motivated black youth into a summer debate residency at Harvard College. HDCDP cultivates scholars seeking to further their education at elite colleges and universities.

Students will learn from Harvard Diversity Project instructors and students, after which they will apply the skills through activities/mock debates and receive constructive feedback to further develop their critical thinking and communication skills.

Each year, Harvard Diversity Project recruits a cohort of talented black youth out of an applicant pool of hundreds throughout metro Atlanta.

On Saturdays, students undergo a rigorous 10-month training regimen, where they are introduced to debate through the exploration of academic disciplines that foster critical thinking, public speaking, and argumentation.

The program culminates with a summer residency at Harvard College, where students study academic debate alongside and compete against hundreds of gifted scholars from around the world.

Tickets are $35 and are available through harvardatl.eventbrite.com
