Five police officers were shot and killed early Friday in Dallas, TexasSeveral more were wounded.

As news spread, metro Atlanta law enforcement agencies took to social media to express their condolences. Gwinnett County police Chief Butch Ayers also sent an email to his department's officers and employees, reminding them that they "have the overwhelming support of our citizens."

The full message:

"To the men and women of the Gwinnett County Police Department,

Today is a very sad day for law enforcement throughout the country. Last night's unprovoked and deadly assault on DART and DPD police officers evokes strong emotions, ranging from shock and grief to anger and rage.

Always remember our mission statement and core values. We have the overwhelming support of our citizens. I have received several emails last night and this morning reaffirming that support:

• 'Just wanted to send a quick note to say that I'm thinking of you and the Gwinnett PD. Thanks for all that you do to keep our community safe.'

• 'The thoughts of my family and I are with you all today. We are praying for your safety today and everyday. We love our police officers in Gwinnett County and are very appreciative of the work you do on our behalf. There are those out there who hate for the sake of hate…you know that because you see it more often than anyone should have to. Know that there are many more of us out there who love you folks, pray for you and would never treat you with disrespect.'

• 'The violence, sadness and distrust among our citizens of all colors and professions, is heart-breaking. I write this after midnight, watching the events unfold in Dallas. My wife and I are appalled and saddened by this event. Good things and bad things happen in life every day. But the violence in our nation. What an incredibly sad day for our country. Thank you and your officers for your service. Each of us has good days and bad days. Prayers to the officers and their families in Dallas and here in Gwinnett County as well.'

Continue to perform your duties with the dedication, professionalism and compassion that sets this department from the others. Continue to support our community, our law enforcement brothers and sisters across the nation, and each other. And above all, stay vigilant and stay safe."
