Avondale Estates seeks volunteers for Hurricane Harvey relief effort
In response to the devastating hurricane that has brought flooding and damage to parts of Texas and the Gulf Coast, the city of Avondale Estates is opening a donation drop-off point to help the victims of this horrific storm.
The City of Avondale Estates and Generation Avondale are partnering to collect supplies for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey in the Houston area. The collection will take place at the former credit union building parking lot at 64 N. Avondale Road, at the intersection with Oak Street in Avondale Estates.
For those wanting to support this emergency response effort, the following donations have been requested: blankets, sleeping bags, air mattresses, pillows and towels. Also needed are personal toiletries such as new toothbrushes, toothpaste, lotions, shampoo, and deodorant. Additionally, household cleaning products and laundry detergent are requested, as are non-perishable snack foods, board games, coloring books/crayons, and playing cards. The items will be donated to relief organizations such as the American Red Cross for delivery to the impacted region.
The donation drop-off point will be open Friday, Sept. 8 through Sunday, Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Donations may be dropped off during those hours at the former credit union building at 64 North Avondale Road, located at the corner of North Avondale Road and Oak Street - across from Skip’s Hot Dogs.
Additionally, the City of Avondale Estates is recruiting volunteers to help receive and organize donations. Help is needed with check in, sorting, unloading and loading donations from resident vehicles to the storage pods in the parking area of the former credit union building. Some light to heavy lifting may be required. Adults and children are welcome. Volunteers can also sign up for multiple slots on multiples days. A certificate for service hours will be provided by Generation Avondale.
