A South Georgia police chief was arrested Friday and charged with aggravated assault.
Walter R. Young, chief of police in Omega, allegedly assaulted an inmate in the Tift County Jail Thursday night, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The GBI said the inmate, whom they did not name, was arrested by the Omega Police Department for shoplifting.
GBI spokesman John Bankhead said the inmate was not behaving, and someone from the Tift County Sheriff's Office called Young to let him know.
Young came to the jail where the alleged assault occurred, then took the inmate from the jail and dropped him off at home.
The inmate sustained serious injuries, including a broken nose, the GBI said. The Tift County Sheriff's Office asked the GBI to investigate the allegations against Young.
Bankhead said in addition to the alleged assault, the GBI will also be investigating why the inmate was released.
After his arrest, Young was transported to the Crisp County Detention Center. The GBI said the investigation is continuing.
Omega is located 10 miles south of Tifton and nearly 200 miles south of Atlanta.
