University of Georgia officials ended a national search Friday by promoting one of their own to the second-highest job in the university’s administration.

Jere Morehead — a legal studies professor at UGA and vice president for instruction — will take the reins Jan. 2 as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.

He replaces Arnett Mace, who is retiring. A search committee selected four finalists last month for the job, including Morehead and three others from outside Georgia. It was up to UGA President Michael Adams to make a final selection.

“I became convinced that the person most capable of leading the academic mission of the University of Georgia for the next several years was already here,” Adams said Friday. Morehead’s already deep involvement with the university, Adams said, meant he could move ahead in the new job quickly.

Morehead, a former assistant U.S. attorney, came to UGA in 1986.

As provost, he will be UGA’s chief academic officer and oversee areas including instruction, research and student affairs. He will also be the point man for policies and practices that affect the university’s academic life as a whole.
